How to send large video files to an editor

Raw footage is big. A few minutes of 4K from a phone can run to several gigabytes. Here's how to get it to your editor in full quality.

Don't send it through a messaging app

Many messaging and social apps shrink video to save data, and you often can't tell until the editor opens the file. Send the original file instead, using one of the options below.

Option 1: upload it directly

If the file is small enough, upload it straight to your editor. On clipTin's order form you can upload one file of up to 4 GB.

To check the size: on Windows, right-click the file and choose Properties. On a Mac, select it and press Command+I. On an iPhone, open the video in Photos and swipe up, or check it in the Files app.

Option 2: share a Google Drive link

  1. Go to Google Drive and upload the video (New, then File upload). Wait until the upload finishes.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Share, then Copy link (or open Share and change General access).
  3. Set General access to Anyone with the link, as Viewer.
  4. Paste the link wherever your editor asks for it.

Got several files, like separate cameras or audio? Put them in one folder and share the folder the same way.

Option 3: share a Dropbox link

  1. Upload the video to Dropbox and wait for it to finish syncing.
  2. Click Share on the file or folder, then create or copy the link.
  3. Make sure the link settings let anyone with the link view it.
  4. Paste the link for your editor.

Check the link before you send it

Open the link in a private or incognito browser window. If it asks you to sign in or request access, your editor will see the same thing, so change the sharing setting and try again.

Tips to keep it smooth

  • Send the original, not a screen recording of it or a re-export.
  • Trim first if you only want part of it edited. Smaller files upload faster, and with clipTin less footage also costs less.
  • Use Wi-Fi for big uploads and keep the device awake until it finishes.
  • Name files clearly, like "episode-12-camera-a.mp4".

At clipTin, your original footage is deleted 7 days after delivery, and your download link works for 7 days.
